Chibanga ward has emerged as the winner of the first ever independence soccer tournament in line with the premise of community sport as provided for under the national sports policy. The funds were disbursed by the ministry of youth and sport which has been funded by Government. The runners up were Katembula while Kafubu ward scooped third prize with Bulaya ward coming fourth in the tournament whose Semi-finals was played yesterday 19th October 2024.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Lufwanyama Town Council secretary Lynda Mapara called on oneness during the tournament and encouraged the players to make sports as part of their everyday life for the good of their wellbeing.
Ms Mapara added that the soccer tournament like the one being held would help in talent identification in the district which would encourage many to participate if a player from Lufwanyama was to play on the national team one day. And District Commissioner Justin Mwalikwa emphasized the need to continue with community sports in the district.
Meanwhile, guest of honor Lufwanyama Member of Parliament Kenny Siachisomu, has thanked all the wards for participating in the tournament which shows commitment to community sport, he has further thanked the players for exhibiting the highest level of discipline during the games.
In fourth position Bulaya ward walked away with Jerseys and a ball. Third position Kafubu walked away with a ball Jerseys and K1500. Second position was Katembula ward who walked away with a ball, jerseys and K2500. The winning ward Chibanga walked away with a ball, jerseys and a K5000.
